Covid: millions on self-isolation in GB, empty supermarket shelves

In the UK, all major supermarket chains have apologised for the empty shelves in their shops: what has now been dubbed the ‘pingdemic’, or the ‘pandemic’ triggered by the obligation to go on lockdown, has been putting a strain on goods supply chains for days.

Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose have all confirmed that they are experiencing problems, with increasing numbers of staff and delivery drivers having to isolate themselves because they have come into contact with someone positive for Covid-19. Some BP petrol pumps and shops have already closed: this is the case of Iceland, a frozen food chain, which has announced that it has 1,000 employees – 4% of its workforce – stuck at home.

Nel Regno Unito, tutte le più importanti catene di supermercati si sono scusate per gli scaffali vuoti nei negozi: quella che ormai è stata ribattezzata ‘pingdemic’, ovvero la ‘pandemia’ scatenata dall’obbligo di mettersi in isolamento, sta mettendo da giorni a dura prova le catene approvvigionamento dei beni.

Tesco, Sainsbury’s e Waitrose hanno tutti confermato che stanno avendo problemi: un numero crescente di personale e autisti delle consegne che si devono isolare perché entrati in contatto con qualcuno positivo Covid-19. Alcune pompe di benzina BP e negozi hanno già chiuso: è il caso di Iceland, una catena di surgelati, che ha reso noto di avere 1.000 dipendenti – il 4% della sua forza lavoro – bloccati a casa.
