Oxford, stop child trials with Astrazeneca

Astrazeneca’s vaccine trials in children have been suspended pending analysis by Oxford University, which is testing possible links between the drug and thrombosis in adults.

Professor Andrew Pollard explained that researchers at Oxford University had decided to suspend the trials pending further information. The trials started in February and involved children between 6 and 17 years old. About 300 volunteers had come forward.

“Although there are no safety concerns in the paediatric trial, we are awaiting further information from Mhra (the UK Medicines Authority, ed) on the rare cases of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia that have been reported in adults, before administering any further vaccines“, Professor Pollard explained.

The preliminary timetable for the European Medicines Agency’s press conference on the new Pharmacovigilance Risk Committee (Prac) assessment of AstraZeneca’s vaccine in relation to rare events of cerebral thrombosis is set for 4pm today, the Ema said in a statement.
