A 52-year-old woman has died in Australia from a rare and severe case of thrombosis that, according to the Medicines Authority, is “likely” related to the AstraZeneca vaccine, as The Guardian reports.
“Fully vaccinated people with documents in line with the EU Covid digital certificate should be exempted from travel testing or quarantine, 14 days after receiving their last dose. This should also apply to cured persons who have received a single dose of vaccine“.
“The risk of suffering a thrombosis following the inoculation of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine is “infinitesimal”. This was stated in an interview with ‘Repubblica’ by Andrew Pollard of Oxford University, one of the fathers of the serious Vaxzevria and head of its trial.
Yesterday, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) launched a review to assess reports of thromboembolic events in recipients of the US vaccine.
Astrazeneca’s vaccine trials in children have been suspended pending analysis by Oxford University, which is testing possible links between the drug and thrombosis in adults.
Professor Andrew Pollard explained that researchers at Oxford University had decided to suspend the trials pending further information. The trials started in February and involved children between 6 and 17 years old. About 300 volunteers had come forward.
“Although there are no safety concerns in the paediatric trial, we are awaiting further information from Mhra (the UK Medicines Authority, ed) on the rare cases of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia that have been reported in adults, before administering any further vaccines“, Professor Pollard explained.
The preliminary timetable for the European Medicines Agency’s press conference on the new Pharmacovigilance Risk Committee (Prac) assessment of AstraZeneca’s vaccine in relation to rare events of cerebral thrombosis is set for 4pm today, the Ema said in a statement.
