Covid: virologist in charge of Wuhan lab: Unsubstantiated accusations

China’s most famous virologist, Shi Zhengli, head of the Wuhan laboratory at the centre of international speculation about the origin of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, denies as “baseless” suspicions about the virology institute and reports of three of her colleagues falling ill before the outbreak of abnormal pneumonia, later identified as Covid-19. “How could I provide evidence for something for which there is no evidence?” the scientist said in a rare interview, granted to the New York Times.

Delta variant blocks ports in China: global trade paralysis feared

More and more containers are being held up at some of the most strategic points in the Asian giant. The emergence of Covid-19 outbreaks among port workers is costing an even more serious traffic jam than that which occurred in the Suez Canal, with potential consequences on time and costs.

Ships are calling at Yantian but container handling is facing serious delays, forcing them to stop for up to five days.

Maersk, the world’s largest container line, said current productivity at Yantian’s terminals is about 30% of normal levels. To avoid delays, the company and other shipping companies are diverting some of their ships to other terminals.

China has offered to urgently send Covid-19 vaccines to Taiwan at a time when the island is facing a massive wave of infection but has received a flat refusal. In a late-night statement, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said it was very concerned about the pandemic currently affecting Taiwan, noting that it had repeatedly offered help and that some groups and individuals had requested the purchase of Chinese vaccines.
